Christopher Bearman, OAM: TYO Chief Conductor

Christopher spent the first half of his career as a professional violinist, based in London. This included regular work with BBC Symphony Orchestra and with conductors such as Pierre Boulez, John Pritchard, Colin Davis, Andrew Davis, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, Gunter Wand, Charles Mackerras, Richard Hickox, and Vernon Handley.

Christopher began conducting in 1990 with the formation of the South London Chamber Orchestra and continued his passion for teaching in positions with the Central Coast Conservatorium, Newcastle Conservatorium, Sydney Youth Orchestra, and Australian Youth Orchestra.

In 1999, Christopher conducted the newly-formed Central Coast Symphony Orchestra and oversaw its development toward the now semi-professional ensemble it is today.

Christopher’s main focus in providing training activities is to link ensemble playing with individual tuition, and to assist students of all levels to understand why musical style is part of basic technique, and how they can make the music they play come alive.

Due to his contribution to the development of music education and performance in the Central Coast Region of NSW, Christopher was awarded an OAM in 2010.

In 2016, Christopher moved to Tasmania and maintains his role as Musical Director of Lake Macquarie Philharmonic and conductor for Hunter Opera.
