Austrian born violinist and composer Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) is regarded as one of the greatest violinists of all time. Why was Kreisler such a controversial artist?

Kreisler wrote a number of pieces in the styles of composers of the distant past, including Praeludium and Allegro in the Style of Pugnani, Sicilienne and Rigaudon in the Style of Francoeur, Hungarian Dance in F major (After Brahms) and many others. However, upon performance, Kreisler passed of these works as actual compositions of these composers. It was only after the critics had praised the works that he admitted that they were in fact his own.
