TYO Chamber Music Program

Participation in this elite chamber music program is offered to our top scoring auditionees and runs in select programs across the year.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with some of Tasmania's finest chamber musicians to develop ensemble skills and learn the secrets of chamber music.

Participants will work with mentors to learn rehearsal technique, leadership and the nuances of chamber music - both the playing and the diplomacy.

Chamber ensembles will perform alongside TYO in concert, as well as in special performance opportunities. Being a smaller, more agile performing group, who knows where their performances may take them!

This program is made available FREE to our TYO participants thanks to the generosity of our supporters.

Percussion Program

Our new Percussion Ensemble will be available to all TYO players and provide an excellent environment to develop technique under the expert tutelage of conductor and mentor, Tracey Patten. We also have some fantastic guests who will be joining us to workshop audition excerpts and are very excited to welcome alumnus and guest soloist, Rob Cossom!

Our Mentors

Peter Tanfield

Born in England in 1961, Peter Tanfield started the violin aged for and has won prizes in The Carl Flesch International Competition, International Mozart Competition, International Bach Competition and many more.

Peter came to Australia in 1998 to lead the Australian String Quartet and held that role until November 2001, during which time he dedicated himself to the Quartet's development and teaching at the University of Adelaide.

As a soloist and chamber musician, Peter has played throughout Europe, China, Japan, USA and more, and has made numerous recordings for television, radio and CD.

David Matthews

A member of the Medici Quartet for 20 years, a full time ensemble based in London, performing the in most of the major concert halls in over 50 countries around the world. During this time, the quartet gained a formidable reputation, not only through concerts but also numerous broadcasts, both radio and TV, resulting in recording contracts with EMI and Nimbus Records which culminated in the recording of all the quartets by Beethoven (the Mount Everest for quartets!).

Also in demand for teaching and coaching at Summer Schools and Universities, the quartet held residencies at the Universities of York, Lancaster and Kingston, and were awarded Honorary Fellows at Lancaster. David was awarded ARAM for services to music in the UK.

Stefanie Farrands

Violist Stefanie Farrands has been Principal Violist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra since 2015, after living and studying in Berlin from 2010 with renowned Violist Tabea Zimmermann at the Hochschule für Musik, Hanns Eisler Berlin. She is currently tutor of Viola at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music.

Stefanie has performed with many renowned orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Camerata Salzburg, and Spira Mirabilius, and is a regular guest with the Australian Chamber and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras.

She has appeared as soloist with the ACO Collective, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, AYO Young Symphonists and the MSO performing the Australian premiere of Olga Neuwirth's Viola Concert (2011).

Stefanie was the recipient of the Freedman Classical Fellowship in 2016 and is the founding member of the Hamer Quartet, with which she won the Asia Pacific Chamber Music Competition (2009).

David Nuttall

David Nuttall is the Principal Oboist of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Adjunct Professor at the UTAS Conservatorium of Music.

Prior to this, he held the positions of Associate Professor at the Australian National University, where he was a member of the internationally acclaimed wind quintet, The Canberra Wind Soloists, and Associate Principal Oboist of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He was also a core member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. David has recorded a number of CDs for ABC Classics and Tall Poppies and has been a soloist with most of Australia's symphony orchestras. He particularly loves helping young people to learn.

Michael Lichnovsky

After completing a Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Iowa, Michael returned to Melbourne to commence teaching at Monash University and the University of Melbourne. He subsequently moved to Bendigo with his young family to head the Woodwind Department at Girton Grammar School.

As an instrumentalist, Michael has performed with Orchestra Victoria and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and has also been an active chamber musician. His involvement wth Elision and Libra Ensemble fostered his love of contemporary music and he has now premiered more than twenty new works. Michal's music-making is constituted by performing, teaching, conducting, researching, recording and writing. He has conducted orchestras, wind bands, choirs, and jazz groups from beginner to professional ensembles.

Robert Cossom

Originally from Tasmania, Robert Cossom studied percussion and drum kit with Tom O'Kelly and Eric Johnstone. Involvement in TYO for a number of years, one of Robert's strongest memories is composing a piece for the new percussion ensemble started by his tutor (and recently retired MSO Principal Timpanist), Christine Turpin. He attended the Tasmanian Conservatorium, where he was awarded distinctions in composition and performance.

Crediting TYO as "basically the reason I do what I do", Robert has performed with the Queensland, West Australian and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras and is currently a member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO). He has appeared as soloist with the Tasmanian and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras and has given solo recitals in Melbourne, Sydney, Hobart and Canberra.

Robert maintains a considerable commitment to education; he has tutored at several National Music Camps, presented schools concerts for the MSO and is currently teaching percussion at Melbourne University.

In 2004, Robert established the MSO Snare Drum Award for tertiary students and, during 2007, 2008, and 2001, he was composer-in-residence at Border Music Camp, Albury. Robert's compositions are regularly heard in Australia and overseas, including recent performances at the Banff Centre in Canada. His works appear in AMEB, VCE and national tertiary education syllabi. Robert is a member of the board of the Cybec Foundation and a proud alumnus of the Derwent Scottish Pipe Band. Taking delight in the enormous variety of percussive instruments, Robert is also a specialist cimbalom player and has addressed the Japan Percussion Society on the art of its performance.

We are exceptionally proud to welcome Robert back as our guest alumni soloist with our TYO Percussion Ensemble.
