Youth Chorale Conductor

Tasmanian Youth Orchestra (TYO) is seeking applications for the role of Conductor: TYO Youth Chorale. This is a contractor position. The successful candidate will commence conducting duties as soon as possible and lead the TYO Youth Chorale for the remainder of 2019 and throughout 2020.

The TYO Youth Chorale is the senior TYO chorale ensemble, offering vocal training and performance to singers aged 11 to approximately 17. Chorale singers have the opportunity to rehearse regularly with their conductor and a dedicated accompanist, perform at TYO concerts at least three times a year and take up other performance opportunities as they present. The chorale does not hold auditions and all participants are welcomed. The group aims to foster a love of music and promote excellence in vocal and choral technique, within an inclusive environment which emphasises teamwork and community.

As Conductor, you will be responsible for cultivating this environment and for the overall development of your young cohort. A range of fun and engaging repertoire is learnt in weekly rehearsals, tailored specifically to the needs of the singers to develop sound technique, musicianship, rhythmic and tonal skills, listening skills and aural training. You will be supported by a TYO rehearsal coordinator who attends each rehearsal to support your teachings and assist with administration and practical support.

We invite applications from those who would like to be considered for the position of TYO Youth Chorale Conductor. Please note that valid and current Working with Vulnerable People registration is a prerequisite for all TYO employees and contractors. This is a non-negotiable requirement.

As part of our ongoing program, we run ad hoc tutorial sessions within each ensemble. These are designed to support the growth of the ensemble at various times through the year and provide a platform to focus on instrument-specific topics and address difficult passages. We welcome expressions of interest from suitably qualified instrumental teachers who would like to take these sessions. Please forward your CV and a cover letter to, and include the ensemble or level you would be best suited to and how you would see yourself contributing to the development of the players.
