Tasmanian Youth Orchestra (usually known as ‘TYO’) delivers classical music education, development and performance programs to young Tasmanian musicians and singers aged five to 25. TYO connects young Tasmanians to some of the best musicians in Australia, providing ensemble performing experiences and inspirational leadership journeys. Our vision is to inspire, nurture and develop young Tasmanians, to perform to their very best and enjoy a lifelong love of music.

Founded in 1965, the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra is one of the oldest state youth orchestras in Australia. TYO seeks to deliver a program of outstanding benefit, provide pathways to professional careers and grow lifetime musicians and supporters of the arts.

Currently, TYO has eight core ensembles, including two symphony orchestras, two string groups, a wind ensemble, percussion ensemble and two chorales. TYO in 2019 has also delivered a development program in the North/North West of Tasmania, as well as chamber program extension opportunities to senior players. Overall, the TYO program provides musical pathways for a wide range of participants – from those new to ensemble music, through to accomplished youth musicians who are already experienced performers.

Interested in joining us? Late auditions for instrumental ensembles have now closed for the year; however, the 2020 ensembles program will be announced in late October 2019.
