Overview: the TYO Artistic Team

TYO appoints conductors, tutors and mentors with exceptional credentials and experience. They are highly respected musicians in their own right; and are selected for their ability to inspire young musicians and singers and provide growth-oriented guidance based in sound music pedagogy.

Working under the guidance of the TYO Chief Conductor, reporting to the TYO General Manager, and supported by an experienced production team and specialist tutors, TYO's Ensemble Directors take responsibility for selecting repertoire and guiding and developing their young musicians through three programs each year, each culminating in a either a live or filmed performance. Performance collaborations with other TYO ensembles are encouraged.

All roles require full commitment to scheduled 2022 performance dates and a commitment to the majority of rehearsal dates. An overview of 2022 program and performance dates can be found here

All TYO contractors are required to maintain current Working with Vulnerable People registration and all applicants will be Police checked. Just as importantly, the TYO values are at the heart of how we operate as a team: please overview our values here or better still, read through the TYO 2021-2024 Strategic Plan to better understand TYO's vision, values and approach.

Ensemble Director:
TYO Chamber Orchestra 2022

The TYO Chamber Orchestra was first offered as an ensemble in 2021 under a guest conductor model to round out TYO's youth orchestral offerings. With the orchestra now confirmed as core ensemble within the TYO program, the time has come to appoint a full-year ensemble director for 2022.

  • The ensemble size for 2022 will be 25-30 musicians.

  • The TYO Chamber Orchestra rehearses on Saturdays between 8.40-10.40am.

Player entry to this ensemble is by competitive audition, with the approximate entry standard at AMEB (or equivalent) grade 5-7 and an age range of 12-18. The majority of the young musicians in this ensemble have already played in the TYO Sinfonietta and as such already have orchestral and performance experience: this ensemble is designed to give them a higher-challenge experience and expose them to a wider range of repertoire.

About you

The 2022 Ensemble Director for the TYO Chamber Orchestra will need to demonstrate the following.

  • Outstanding musical training and orchestral performance experience.

  • Strong experience in ensemble conducting – please feel free to include video links to previous work in your application.

  • Excellent knowledge of orchestral repertoire.

  • A sound understanding of musical pedagogy and preferably experience working in educational settings.

  • A heart for working with young people. Our young musicians are the reason we do what we do and supporting and guiding them to develop as well-rounded, capable and collegial musicians is our first priority.

Joint Ensemble Directors:
TYO Sinfonietta 2022

Two roles: one strings-focussed and one wind/brass/percussion-focussed.

The TYO Sinfonietta is TYO's entry-level orchestra and as such there is a strong focus on guidance and development. The ensemble runs to a high-support model with two ensemble directors and weekly sectionals.

  • The ensemble size for 2022 will be around 35 musicians.

  • The TYO Sinfonietta rehearses on Saturdays between 8.30-10.30am.

  • The first 45 minutes of each rehearsal is sectional: strings and wind/brass/percussion players work separately, each with their dedicated director.

  • The second hour of rehearsal is tutti. Each joint director will take tutti conducting responsibilities for one program (either program 1 or program 3): program 2 has a filmed performance outcome and as such tutti conducting duties for this program will be shared.

Player entry to this ensemble is by competitive audition, with the approximate entry standard at AMEB (or equivalent) grade 3-5 and an age range of 8-15. For many young musicians, this is their first experience of playing in a full orchestra and the focus is therefore on supporting development as an ensemble player.
